Last Quote of the Week #26

Final thoughts from survey takers, and focusing more on the general consensus of the addition of romance content in DLC, and why many hoped for it.  Hope you enjoy, and fare thee well!

“As a gamer, of course I’m interested in the aspects of gameplay, action and game design, but I came into Bioware games for the stories. Specifically, I’m not a big fan of sci-fi or shooters, so I avoided Mass Effect for a long time. Then the Mass Effect 2 free demo came out and I thought, what harm is there in trying it out? I’m glad I did. I love the Mass Effect universe, the lore, the characters. And that’s why I was so disappointed at how the romance aspect was handled in Mass Effect 3. Is it the most important aspect of our story? No, but it IS a very important one, especially for the individual stories of our Shepards and their LI’s, and how the different relationships help develop the characters. So please, BioWare, help us deepen the relationships between the characters we love so much and fully develop them in this last chapter of their story.”

“The most disappointing thing about Mass Effect 3 was the treatment of your crewmates from ME2. You spent an entire game recruiting a badass squad and getting emotionally attached to them, and then in ME3 they either die, or you get one or two scenes with them. Makes me wonder why I even bothered with ME2, if pretty much all of the characters were going to be tossed aside.”

Quote of the Week #25

Up this week is Garrus Vakarian.  Most survey takers were satisfied with the overall romance, but three common complaints did crop up.  The most constant grievance involved the final romance scene between Garrus and fem!Shepard.  There was also numerous mentions of a trip to Palaven with Garrus and the availability to romance him with a male!Shepard.  Here are some examples:

“This was probably the best fleshed out and thorough romance in the game. I loveeeddd it…and it was possibly one of the few things that saved the game for me.”

“Why is Garrus the only one that never gets a decent pre-ending hook-up scene? Seriously, it’s the night before the final assault and Shep and he don’t even get to wake up in the bed together. A lot of the other final romance scenes got some soul searching dialogue too, which Garrus did not get”

“I would love more content with Garrus both as an LI and a best friend (if you are manshep). One of the things I never got to do was go to Palaven, and/or meet Garrus’s family. Any additional content with Garrus is something that I would pay for.”

“I didn’t have the option to romance Garrus, since I enjoy and play as Male Shepard. I feel torn that I HAVE to play as a Female Shepard in order to romance him. I have nothing against Female Shepard, but the fact that I HAVE to play as a certain gender in order to have any foreseeable romance option with a potential partner….”

Quote of the Week #24

We haven’t highlighted much of one of the Normandy’s newest crewmembers and LI’s, Samantha Traynor.  Most survey participants didn’t leave comments about Samantha (only about 300 comments out of 6100 + survey takers). Samantha was only romanced by 11% of survey participants, so having fewer comments wasn’t terribly surprising.  One thing I have noticed though, I think her popularity has grown a bit over this past year.  Visit a handful of gaming forums, and you can see the fandom being fairly active.

As for fans reactions to her romance, they seem to be all over the place. Some saw her romance as sweet, endearing, while others thought it was poorly executed with the final love scene.  Still others saw this romance as a “filling the quota”, kind of thing.  A need to have a same-sex only romance arc, that could only be engaged with a fem!Shepard.

However you saw Ms. Traynor’s romance, she did make an impact.  Here are some of your thoughts:

“Did not romance, even though I liked her character, because the romance scene was terrible and cheesy and ruined it for me. Really wish someone who was more sensitive, who would have taken the idea of a Same sex romance seriously, had written her. As is, the Traynor romance is horribly cheesy soft core porn, and I will never partake in it.”

“One of the only well done romances, the only issue is how short it is when more should be added.”

“Traynor seems a bit shoe-horned in. It seemed far more plausible for her to have a relationship with Diana Allers than Shepard.”

“I really loved Traynor, but I wanted so much more time with her. I wanted actual cut scenes with her, where I could chose how to respond to her. I wanted to meet her on the Citadel. Basically I wanted MORE. But I really did love her speech to Shepard before the end of the game.”

Quote of the Week #23 – Concerning Zaeed Massani

As many of you have probably read, Robin Sachs – the voice of Zaeed Massani – passed away a few days ago.  This information was released yesterday, and I thought it apropos to highlight some of the comments related to those that had hoped for a Zaeed + Shepard pairing.  Much to love about the ex-Blue Suns leader, and old curmudgeon, that was Zaeed Massani.

Our heart felt condolences to Mr. Sachs’ family and friends.

“Dude, Zaeed would be an amazing romance. I would pay top dollar for that.”

“Zaeed. A thousand times Zaeed. And the turian councilor. This is not a joke. It’s been a lovehate thing all along, he just doesn’t know.”

“It seemed in ME2 that there was a hint toward a romantic encounter with Shiala, but it doesn’t go anywhere. While there is no real opening for a Zaeed romance, I still think it would be great. I love that bastard.”

“If I lived in a universe where animal sacrifice gave me what I wanted, untold amounts of blood would be shed so I could romance Zaeed and/or James. They are amazing characters, and I sincerely wish I could have romanced them, or even just had more interaction with them.”

“No seriously, Zaeed Massani. You have no idea how much I want this.”

Quote of the Week #22

I decided to grab a few more quotes from Survey takers, responding to questions about New And Non-Fully Romanceable characters. As you can imagine, many had thoughts regarding Samara and Kelly, but there were good responses for the likes of James Vega, Javik, Kasumi Goto, Gianna Parisini and others, regardless of the fact that they were never made romanceable in any of the games. Enjoy!

“I think since Kelly is considered an LI, she should at least have a flashback in the EC or a final goodbye on the Citadel.”

“Javik could reward Shepard with a reproductive ritual. (I’m sorry, I had to). But really, Female Shepard needs more male romance options – if we take Mass Effect 3 as it is with no imports, a Female Shepard has a single male romance option compared to the harem of women (and men!) who are after Male Shepard. An exclusive-to-FemShep male option would be nice too.”

“Please, please, make Gianna Parisini romanceable! She’s a great character and I loved her!!”

“Why Vega isn’t an option for FemShep is beyond me. Really need more romanceable males. Also would have been nice to see more than 1 different line from “romanced” Samara.”

Quote of Week #21

Going with a “Pick n’ Mix” approach this time, for the QotW.  I randomly chose numbers in the General Comment section of the Survey, to post (though I had to re-pick twice; two were nearly novel size. A bit longer than we generally like to make this section. lol).  Here is the mix for today:

“Thanks for the opportunity to do this survey, I really hope BioWare listens to us. Why didn’t you include anything about a reunion?”

“I would be more than willing to shell out money that develop the existing characters in any way. If they are LI options or not isn’t something I put a lot of empathize on, even if it would be appreciated to see some of the issues resolved that a few current romance arcs currently have, ME2 ones especially. Personally I’d prefer if the DLCs that are requested here tied in to story elements in the game, just like lair of the Shadow Broker did for Liara in ME2.”

“The romance-focused fanbase may be smaller, but I believe some steps in this direction could do a lot in regaining at least some peoples’ goodwill.”

“Every bit character in the series does not need to have SQUADMATE/ROMANCE DLC! People need to get a grip.”

Quote of the Week #20

In preparation for this week’s Focus Friday, our survey commenters’ thoughts on Kaidan Alenko will be highlighted.  Comments on Kaidan ran the gamut from loving his romance and character, to finding him boring, to irritation at his accusations of FemShep “cheating”. And, though some felt it was out of character to make him bisexual for the third game, many were thrilled with the opportunity to romance this soft-spoken biotic, with a male Shepard.

Here is a sampling of some of those expressed thoughts:

“Kaidan’s romance was really good and quality-wise I have no complaints, but once you get him back to the Normandy there were almost no dialogues with him, even less romance-related ones. Would also have liked more battlefield flirting and more unique dialogues if you stayed loyal to him.”

“I appreciated making Kaidan finally romance-able to male Shepards, and Steve was great, but their romances felt short and I’d love to develop their relationships and maybe even have Kaidan address why they couldn’t have gotten together back in ME1.”

“The worst was when he brought up Garrus, when he asked if there ‘was’ something between us. My Shepard at best had the option to act flustered and say, “Oh, I was so confused after Horizon.” While she is sorry if she hurt him, she’s definitely not confused and she didn’t pursue Garrus out of confusion. Would highly prefer the option to unambiguously say, ‘Garrus was there for me, and it’s serious now. I’m sorry if I hurt you.’ None of this flustered damsel stuff, please! :)”

“Kaidan shouldn’t have been made bisexual, when he never expressed himself that way in the previous installments.”

Quote of the Week #19

Liara T’Soni has the largest number of romancers, and many saw her romantic content as fulfilling and satisfying.  But some were quite vocal about the lack of relationship specific dialogue.  Feeling as though they had to keep reaffirming their Shepards’ intent with Liara.  Here are some of those comments:

“I would love if Liara (romanced) would express her feelings towards Shepard more like Tali does.”

“I feel like Liara didn’t show her love until towards the end of the game I wanted her to show her feelings towards Shepard from the start and I was disappointed that Liara tried to friendzone Shepard on the Citadel.”

“While I liked the romance, it seemed that too much of Liara’s interactions occurred whether or not she was romanced. I’d like some original content please.”

Quote of the Week #18

Welcome back to the blog, Romancers!  Clambering out of the holidays and into the New Year, I thought to highlight some of the “general comments” written by survey takers.  Many expressed wanting more face time with the LI’s of the series, and a willingness to pay for it.  Here are a few examples:

“I would definitely be willing to fork over big bucks for this DLC in particular, even having disliked the original endings fiercely.”

“I would pay for romance content as long as the content is worth the money it would cost to download it, you are very good about listening to your fans and I’m fine with paying for something I want :)”

“More Mass Affection.”

Quotes of the Week #17

What’s better than a day dedicated to our crazy biotic, fille fatale, Jack? How about two!  Readers can spend some quality time reliving Jack’s spin on the Normandy and with her “kids” in ME3, by checking out the Character Spotlight posted on Tuesday.  Survey takers had mostly positive things to say regarding Jack, and simply crave more time with our “psychotic-biotic”.  A sampling of some of your quotes:

“I absolutely loved Jack in ME2, the thing I was the most pumped about in ME3 was continuing to see her and our relationship develop. I was extremely let down that she only appeared in one mission.”

“Jack is easily my favorite character in the series. Every line of hers in 2 and 3 is awesome. There just…wasn’t enough of it in 3! What was there was wonderful and well written, but it was just a tease. When it ended on the dance floor, I was left confused and asking, ‘Where’d she go? Did my game glitch? Was…was that it.”

“It also is kinda crappy that Jack and Miranda share and extended cut slide. They are the same just with the characters swapped around.”
